I was sent a text from 616-287-6077, asking to hire me for work. They didn’t give a name, but sent me a check for more than the agreed upon amount for the work I was to perform. The check was fake. This person wanted me to deposit the check in my bank account, keep the amount agreed to be my pay and to give the remainder to a person who was supposedly dropping off material at an address near me. This is common scam. The scammer sends a check for more money than agreed upon and ask you to give the extra amount to someone after depositing the check in your account. It can up to a week for your bank to find out there are no funds in the account or the account doesn’t exist. You are responsible for paying the bank back the whole amount of the check. You may likely even have your account frozen and closed. You are responsible for anything you put in your account. These checks look legit and even have a real routing number which is why some banks unknowingly cash them. If it smells like shit, it is.
